Listen of the Day - "Lonely" - Secret American written by Jess Komyati (that Papi and the Smears woman)

Secret American, brings on the bliss.  This exuberant 7 piece live band has that "thing".  One listen to the ebullient, get over yourself band and you are hooked. If you aren't charmed by this band's rhythmic know how and synchronized live dancing, I don't want to be your friend. Most bandmates live in the mighty music city of Philly. Derek  Krzywicki, their lead singer and principal songwriter, took  a plane ride to  the West coast and never came back East. They describe themselves as a “bi-coastal band from the U.S. blending indie soul with classic and contemporary pop-rock stylings”. They are known for their whimsical vibe while writing impactful, infectious music. They keep their music sunny and their twangy guitars give you the feeling of bonfire blasé.
For all of you radio rats, I would go out on a limb to  compare these guys to the main stream band BORNS. They have also been likened to Cage the Elephant and Beck. They keep it light as Derek really balances out the groovy surf/rock guitar sound. This Beach Boyesque/Dick Dale light style causes them to be a rarity amongst other groups.   Derek  spends the bulk of his precious time in Carpentaria, California. This is where the band must get their beachy California pop-rock influence.
Secret American recently released a new single called “Lonely” on September 20, 2019. This sunny melody really gives you a happy listening experience. The bouncy drum beat and breezy instruments keep the groovy sensation through the whole song. When I first heard the single I thought “I like this song”. The second time I listened to it I found myself tapping my toes and singing along to the catchy chorus.

As I dug into the song more and more I began to notice the warmth of the vocal harmonies adding a whimsical feel to the track. If this song doesn’t make your head nod and your soul dance I don’t know what will. This song speaks about what it takes to be in love and stay in love. “If you want to be like me you better be lonely, you better think only of the woman/man you have.” is a straight forward message that relates to the masses.  The smooth instrumentals that evoke the blissful feels of a sunny day at the beach keep you grooving for the whole four minute masterpiece.

Pool Party!!
The Take Away for "Lonely"
I cannot get enough of this marvelous band! They have an album that came out in 2018 called “Warmth and Shelter”.  It is totally worth a repeat listen and is sure to feed any Secret American cravings you may get from this delicious single. Those fortunate enough to live in the Philadelphia area are encouraged to go see these this 7 piece band live the first chance you get.   They also are starting to tour ousted of PA. Get on the mailing list, follow them on IG and of course go buy that single.
Tina here: They are not a conventional band. Their about on Facebook reads - "tell one, tell all". They are the elixir you need during these muddied water times Many an easy going music lover wishes to be a Secret American. Interpret at your leisure.  Peace & hugs kittens.

Song of the Day - "OPEN" - by Stella Ruze (Rules)

The Gang is all here. STELLA RUZE writtten by Violet Rosette Stella Ruze? More like Stella Rulez! Stella Ruze was birthed in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia in 2014 and is continuing to grow. They just dropped a new video for their newest song “Open”. This song will be featured on their new album “The Greater Dog”. Brendan Johnson & Katie O’Donnell are the band founders and help write most of the songs. The group also includes Keyboardist Mason Wallack and Alex Styer on trumpet. Together they make a stellar team! What could be better than Stella Ruze the 4-piece?   Stella Ruze the 7-piece! These funky monkeys have added accomplished blues drummer Sean McIntyre who really knows his way around a drum set. They also merged Bass guitar extraordinaire Ted Mayo and saxophone player, Vince Gleason, who is a lifetime member of the legendary Mummer group – Ferko String Band, into the previous 4-piece. According to the band, “Our new sound emboldens our message to fa

Song of the day - The Big Swirl - Barney Cortez

Wild opening sequence  draws you in with a sweep of psychedelic, cowboy energy.  barney favors Stetson looks btw.  Eclectic guitar riffs match the lyrical sass and elegant horn accouterments.  Barney comes at you with silky smooth vocals that belie the hard truth as he tells  a little story about his journey.  He thought he should call this track Runaway but The Big Swirl spews intrigue.  He sing about being a coke a cola freak and the failure trap.  So he Runs away. "The Big Swirl" emanates from a song by "Sir Rockaby",  Frank Black tune. The particular use of the term moved Barney. He told me,  " " It's what he calls the sky and the universe and I came to use the phrase as the spectrum of human emotions and experience. Sort of like a rebirth." This is deep and poignant kind of like much of Barney's music and though process.  Barney imparts a casual vibe but his songs are ripe with world wariness. He has a groovy vibe sport

Artist of the Week - Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia

A n ironic set of results when you Google,Rubber the band.  The useful office staple pops up. This useful educational article appears Rubber: A simple introduction - Explain that Stuff There is also a 2010 movie entitled Rubber. ´ Rubber  is a 2010 English-language French independent, satirical horror film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers.” Apparently it’s based on a true story. Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia consists of Andrew Loper (Singer/Co-Writer) & John Della Franco (Producer/Co-Writer). This amiable duo is quickly gaining steam and streams.  They are playing in several local Philly venues drawing crowds with only 2 secured singles out. They say an EP is coming soon. “Contol” snapped and popped into my finely tuning auditory system. The level of sophisticated twists in this melodious song about contemporary angst is right on point. The aspect of pretending to be in control anchors this self admittedly personal tr
