Artist of the Day - The Dawn Drapes

The Dawn Drapes are what you need now.  If you are pining for a band that is putting out creative, thoughtful music then Dan Rice and Michael Sanzo will fill a void.  They are self described as “Soulful. Groovy. Rock. Sportful. Gravy. Stone.”  I will let that be haha. I am enchanted by their dandy, dreamy vibe. Their band came from a desire to create a visual of drapes at dawn then the sun is rising and your mind starts popping. It could also be a lover leaving the bed to go home.  I thought maybe it was about a girl named Dawn. Either way the name is enough to stay with you. The Drapes effortlessly combine a hazy blend of righteous guitar playing and stellar singing.A duo from VA but making it happen in Philly, these gentleman are releasing songs that resonate as a blend of psychedelia and breezy indie alternative rock. I They just released their EP Slow Spin with 7 beautifully constructed songs. The lucky 7 tracks  are lyrically ripe with winding guitar flavors and pe

Artist of the Day - The Cinelli Brothers

Say hello or ciao to the explosive Cinelli Bothers who are rocking old style blues. Close your eyes and you will think you were transported back to than era where   Marco, 33 wiled his Eastwood axe like an old should pro. Alessandro, 29, handles the kit like a young Buddy Rich.  They hail form Italy but now call London home.  They have upped the level of blues playing and are bringing back enthusiasm for a this all important genre. The familial tie lets them jam effortlessly on their original music and their cover endeavors. Adding tasty bass sounds and harmonica and keys rounds out their hard working band.   The Cinelli’s developed a passion for the blues as young boys. The band was born out of our passion for the electric Chicago and Texas blues from ’60s and ’70s. Marco and Alessandro play with different musicians to evoke music that is distinct in sound. They could have been signed to Stax or Motown back in the day. Now they are making things happen by tirelessly playing gi

Song of the day - "Turbulence" - Archpalatine

"Turbulence"  Starts with his utilizing his voice as an instrument along with his nimble fingers taking care of the keys. The low rush of background singers whispering “Palatine” sneaks in as he continues to resonate. As his  voice hits its crescendo the pop of the drums whips in a surprise. The deft use of the kit rushes in, quick and edgy.   The song rolls on with dramatic flair while his voice ascends "We will take the chance to fly away" He plays his vocals again as he sings Taaaturbulence then the gust of the drum takes over like a strong supporting character. A song rich in drama and operatic elements, comparisons to Queen are fair. And again the drumming continues stellar.  Listening to this song is like being enveloped in a short play. I can imagine the majestic costumes and sweeping set design. Also I see color when I listen to “Turbulence”; scarlet, rich gold and shades of charcoal much like the picture I just posted. Interestingly I didn'

Artist of the day - Secret Shine

There is a beauty to shoegazing with the ascending rippling electronica guitar and voices hidden wavy riffs. The meandering of vocals under the pedals still making the biggest impact. It is day dreaming music.    Forever with drum kicks and dream pop licks. You don't need to know the lyrics but you must feel them if you are to be real.   Shoegazing may be off in it's own zone. But it is zealous with lush sonic sounds and solemn anthem like lyrics it will get into your system quickly if you allow.    The band Secret Shine keeps the pace with its fuzzed out vocals that blend out a he and she vibe It is perfect balance for the senses. They were there an then came back to keep in the Brighton tradition of of hey we are still here.  There is a sophistication about there music that moves me.   "For You" from their 2017 album There is Only Now" comes on like a reality kick. "All in Your Head" wanders into your psyche. They have a wa

Song of the Day - "Valentine Schmalentine" - SOAK

SOAK continues to rise on my list of ladies that have my ear. Her lyrics linger long after the music fades.  The electronic musical wafts lazily in the background allowing her to sing her truth.  The slow rush of a drum kick, a tap on the tambourine, “Valentine Shmalentine” pulses in all of its anti-love song glory. Not that I am not against love songs but I don't relate to a lot of them. Call me cold call me realistic call me cynical whatever I don't get into it. I love men I am no man hater but then whole love song genre makes me want to scream. BUT hell that's just me. Listen to this poignant song that take on how Valentine’s Day is now so amped up it makes people question themselves and also feel less than. Instead of being a Hallmark Holiday it is more a Facebook mashup. More so she takes it apart as a social media postathon. I don’t have a special someone right now but I don’t want to see everyone’s happy pictures. Plus, we all know they jack up the prices fo

Video of the day - "Le Tigre" - Airpark

Airpark the band Ben and Michael Ford  The video for "Le Tigre" pops with hidden innuendos and dream like revelations. Staged like an elaborate off Broadway Avant garde production, the video begins with Michael quivering on the ground with a slice of blood on his neck. He sings with his distinct vocal intonations "You're built like an earthquake" Moving swiftly to the next visual cadence centering on his steady voice that reminds me of dark brown velvet. The Ford brothers employ a stark minimalist style when it comes to their visual productions of their songs Even their style relies on fitted clothing with minimal accouterments . They keep their hair short and wispy around their sculpted faces. While they look like twins Ben is the elder by a year and a half. The well-directed video centers on the brothers playing the song while a bevy of fencers spar in front of them and then around them.  The psychological mind gam ensues but they "are feeli

Songs of the Day - "Lost Imagination" & "Nothing as Beauttiful" Bandaged Moon

Bandaged Moon Dave Charlton - vocals & rhythm guitar Tom Homan - Keyboards Dan Gowland - Lead guitar Anth Wills - Drums  Combining a special mix of shoegazing dream pop and indie garage rock, Bandaged Moon is a lovely surprise. Again another find on Twitter, the UK based band's music takes one back to the early 90s when dream pop had it's moment before sliding out to the grunge scene shooting out of the Pacific NorthWest. An intersesting observation, the weather  in both areas is oddly similliar with fog filled mornings leading into drizzle shorn afternoons into a lost sundown.  The song "Lost Imagination" greets us with plush keys and a bit of a drum kick "You and me we wonder why our lives our filled with greed" shatters one's self reflection.  "Have I lost my imagination/ Am I running wild?I may never know/ How can we be sure?" The steady synth ripples. "How come have we become the ones who play it safe." Tom's playin
