MLV Does what he wants

Matthew Logan Vasquez plays outlaw psychedelic rock. He mashes up dirty guitar playing with the expressive vocals. He released the EP Texas Murder Ballads earlier this year to  only a few spins on the radio and barely any press reviews. MLV doesn't care I am sure. He is that kind of guy.  He has takes no prisorers attitude and after following him on Instagram his casual lack of concern is evident. He once got an infection and literally toad a picture of him with his adss hangin out o this hospital gown. A true pistol. He takes his guitar to raunchy heights and sings in emotive, expressive heights. He mixes his passion with his poetry and emulates his influences Neil Young, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed while maintinginr his own style.   former member of the California band, Delta Spirit, and a current member of the Indie super group, Middle Brother, MLV released his first solo album in 2016 and followed it up with "Matthew Logan Vasquez Does What He Wants".  And he sure does. The song "Same" is a rowdy rocker he teamed up with the Sufferers front woman, Kam Franklin to make the tune and the two worked together on one of the most hilarious music videos of 2017. He takes his guitar to raunchy heights and sings in emotive, expressive heights. He mixes his passion with his poetry and emulates his influences Neil Young, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed while maintinginr his own style.

"Siera Blanca"was the first and from what i gather only single released off the 5 song EP. It grabs your attention with the steady racing guitar. "You always had such tenderness / Even Saints Need their rest. / They got you fingered / So lay low"  MLV is a raconteur. His songs are descriptive stories. This song is about someone trying to escape to Sierra Blanca. "They will never find you down at the barrio" He writes about  about the crooked cops at the border check. Well isn't that a timely subject. "You always such tenderness / until they took your innocence/"

"Little Tiger" talks about the shattered state of the Nation and how he's had enough. Smokey guitar ala a toned down Jimi. The driving beats come on to hold their own against the steady drum beat.  "A conversation with a lizard at the station / about the shattered state of the nation / She just left me on probation" A wicked poem on it's own. Very Dylanesque in my opion.

His voice gets ferocious and defiant in "Ladonna" "How many shots til the bottom of the bottle/ How many cards are missing from the deck?"  The house he is singing about is haunted. He rolls out the guitar sounds like a character in the tale. It's a haunting tale that MLV pulls off with near close to perfect precision.

He is a story teller at heart and his original lyrics leave you wanting more. His playful attitude bleeds into song writing and playing vibe. He isa  dynamic, unabashedly humorous dude And if you follow his adventures on Instagram you get to see his ridiculously adorable son, Thor and possibly another ass shot. I Wish more artists came forward with such confidence in their humorous insouciance.

Song of the Day - "OPEN" - by Stella Ruze (Rules)

The Gang is all here. STELLA RUZE writtten by Violet Rosette Stella Ruze? More like Stella Rulez! Stella Ruze was birthed in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia in 2014 and is continuing to grow. They just dropped a new video for their newest song “Open”. This song will be featured on their new album “The Greater Dog”. Brendan Johnson & Katie O’Donnell are the band founders and help write most of the songs. The group also includes Keyboardist Mason Wallack and Alex Styer on trumpet. Together they make a stellar team! What could be better than Stella Ruze the 4-piece?   Stella Ruze the 7-piece! These funky monkeys have added accomplished blues drummer Sean McIntyre who really knows his way around a drum set. They also merged Bass guitar extraordinaire Ted Mayo and saxophone player, Vince Gleason, who is a lifetime member of the legendary Mummer group – Ferko String Band, into the previous 4-piece. According to the band, “Our new sound emboldens our message to fa

Song of the day - The Big Swirl - Barney Cortez

Wild opening sequence  draws you in with a sweep of psychedelic, cowboy energy.  barney favors Stetson looks btw.  Eclectic guitar riffs match the lyrical sass and elegant horn accouterments.  Barney comes at you with silky smooth vocals that belie the hard truth as he tells  a little story about his journey.  He thought he should call this track Runaway but The Big Swirl spews intrigue.  He sing about being a coke a cola freak and the failure trap.  So he Runs away. "The Big Swirl" emanates from a song by "Sir Rockaby",  Frank Black tune. The particular use of the term moved Barney. He told me,  " " It's what he calls the sky and the universe and I came to use the phrase as the spectrum of human emotions and experience. Sort of like a rebirth." This is deep and poignant kind of like much of Barney's music and though process.  Barney imparts a casual vibe but his songs are ripe with world wariness. He has a groovy vibe sport

Artist of the Week - Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia

A n ironic set of results when you Google,Rubber the band.  The useful office staple pops up. This useful educational article appears Rubber: A simple introduction - Explain that Stuff There is also a 2010 movie entitled Rubber. ´ Rubber  is a 2010 English-language French independent, satirical horror film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers.” Apparently it’s based on a true story. Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia consists of Andrew Loper (Singer/Co-Writer) & John Della Franco (Producer/Co-Writer). This amiable duo is quickly gaining steam and streams.  They are playing in several local Philly venues drawing crowds with only 2 secured singles out. They say an EP is coming soon. “Contol” snapped and popped into my finely tuning auditory system. The level of sophisticated twists in this melodious song about contemporary angst is right on point. The aspect of pretending to be in control anchors this self admittedly personal tr
