Wednesday is my favorite day of the week because it is when the new edition of the Aquarian comes out. I get my musical fix when I read that alternative mag. I discovered the Forth Wanderers and was instantly charmed by their older than they are sound. The lead singer, Ava Trilling, is a modern chanteuse. A pretty girl with a pretty voice that floats over the deft guitar playing and hint of drum beat. I like they aren't overnight sensation in that sense that Phoebe Bridgers came out of nowhere and ate up alot of radio air waves with her melancholia. Trilling sings with charismatic confidence. There is a distinct style to her singing but it does bring to mind the ladies of the 90s. Packing the diaristic tone of Liz Phair and the Breeders that it is appreciated. The songs have a slow built tone to them with the sounds of the winding guitar harmonizing with Trilling. Listening now to their latest endeavor, a self titled album put out by the amazing Subpop Records reminds me of the weather outside. A slow rolling day full of clouds and mist with the hint of a possible sun view hiding underneath the wall cloud. Carrying the crew with unfettered insouciance she commands the band quietly. The guitar players mix and match with each other with scuzzy riffs and tangled licks. Not a bass heavy band, the bass player moves with earnest chill atmospheric strumming. She looks like the girl you wanted to be in high school. Very attractive but seems intelligent maybe leaning toward geeky. They were to start their summer tour today but yesterday on Twitter of all places (I mean where else right?) I saw they were canceling their tour because she was diagnosed with a mental health issue. I felt terrible for her but also her band. Going on tour is a big deal and well if you don't show up you don't get paid. It was sad that the first thing I thought of was this is no way to start a career BUT then I understand the mental health issue things. I have never been afflicted where I just had to shut down but I suffer from depression mainly due to financial issues and it may be genetic but I do my damnest to keep my head up and keep moving. Sending her a genuine message via Facebook felt like an appropriate gesture. These young kids that I watch moving through the musical waters, sure everyone wants to be a rock star but a rock star in this day and age of social media and immediate connection can be overwhelming and downright daunting. They all seem like sweet kids and mesh well but I hear all of these stories in the lyrics of some of these young people's songs. So much stimulation and this social media ages daunting to me trying to keep off. I give up using my phone in the morning. Moving through their 20 soemthing lives seems to be difficult in this political climate and age of mememe. I wish I could give all these young girls a hug tell them it's get off your phone, talk it out, take a walk, hug your pet don't compare yourself with anyone and love yourself.
"Turbulence" Starts with his utilizing his voice as an instrument along with his nimble fingers taking care of the keys. The low rush of background singers whispering “Palatine” sneaks in as he continues to resonate. As his voice hits its crescendo the pop of the drums whips in a surprise. The deft use of the kit rushes in, quick and edgy. The song rolls on with dramatic flair while his voice ascends "We will take the chance to fly away" He plays his vocals again as he sings Taaaturbulence then the gust of the drum takes over like a strong supporting character. A song rich in drama and operatic elements, comparisons to Queen are fair. And again the drumming continues stellar. Listening to this song is like being enveloped in a short play. I can imagine the majestic costumes and sweeping set design. Also I see color when I listen to “Turbulence”; scarlet, rich gold and shades of charcoal much like the picture I just posted. Interestingly I...
