Songs I like - "Total Disaster" - Rhett Miller

I took the high road once
It was lonely
I find the low road
much more fun

The truth is I'm a total disaster

He rolls up his vocal sleeves and takes the bridge to new heights.
"There is no such thing as perfect
Why even TRYYYYY?"

"Total Disaster" Begins with a peppy guitar picking that makes you think oh maybe this will be a happy tune. But hen you dig intot h lyrics. Miller says "I told you lies then you got WISE" I imagine him singing that line with a wry smile while  shaking his floppy hair accordance.

The melody is full of flip yet elegantly places guitar chords.  Kinkesque riffs abound in this slight turn of direction for solo Miller. Rhett's lustrous, rhythmic voice glides like a gentle September breeze that has the potential to whirl like the Santa Anas at any second.

This song is o simple which makes it the best type of structured dong.  Rhett this tall the elements He recently wrote a piece about Song Writing for No Depression. He discusses stream of consciousness writing and another way of crafgting top songs. He claims the chorus often comes first.
"The chorus is the thesis statement of your song. The chorus is the apex moment. I cannot overstate the importance of a strong chorus."

An inkling into his mind's thoughts about this song seemed perfectly summed up in the  beautiful self effacing veracity.
Girls name, and the color of her eyes, street name and the phase of the moon
Writer them own in  beat up notebook
set them down in a catchy tune
This is what I do
To all of you.

The song is about getting own and dirty with yourself and accepting  you have become perhaps always were. I wish more people (especially guys) would be more like this than those who think hiding behind a façade only to let the air pop from the tires a few hundred miles down the road aka a few months, years into a relationship. "Total Disaster" ends with an audible sigh and the splunk strum of his 6 string.

The song is a true Miller statement about succinct tight songwriting that provides the catchy tune and the "deal with it" lyrics. A master at his craft. I read he doesn't believe in a one and done approach to song writing. He wrote an article detailing his approach that basically boil down to you must put in the work "the required 10k hours of work to write even a semi good song" Thankfully a master of his craft he put in the work and is still creating songs for the deep at heart. And well You know Rhett is only happy when he is singing a sad sad song. A lyric from an overlooked lyrical gem "Out of Love".

Brendan Johnson & Katie O’Donnell are the band founders and help write most of the songs. The group also includes Keyboardist Mason Wallack and Alex Styer on trumpet. Together they make a stellar team! What could be better than Stella Ruze the 4-piece?   Stella Ruze the 7-piece! These funky monkeys have added accomplished blues drummer Sean McIntyre who really knows his way around a drum set. They also merged Bass guitar extraordinaire Ted Mayo and saxophone player, Vince Gleason, who is a lifetime member of the legendary Mummer group – Ferko String Band, into the previous 4-piece. According to the band, “Our new sound emboldens our message t...

Allow me to Introduce The Inclines

The Inclines hail from Kitchener, Ontario. The dynamic four-piece band release songs that ricochet with emotive prowess. They sing of relationships gone South as well as found love. Their style is a brash mix of alternative self-confessional emo indie rock.  They released a few ripping singles earlier in the Spring.  Here is your introduction to the band. Sam Belanger - Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar Jake Robinson - Bass Guitar/Vocals Brad McNeil - Drums/Vocals Cole Saunders - Lead Guitar What's up with the band name?  – “Our singer came up with it about 3 years ago. It doesn’t have any special meaning we just like how ambiguous it sounds.” Tell me about your start as a band  – “ We’ve been a band since 2016. Our  influences  range across many genres such as punk, and R&B. We write our lyrics as a group. Our songwriting process is very chaotic because we always have many songs on the go.” What is your favorite music to listen to? ...

New Discovery - Papi and The Smears

“The suburbs may have raised us but the city keeps us alive!” - Jessica Komyati of Papi and the Smears.   First off the name.... boom. Also they are reviving some true garage grunge rock with and indie twist of lemon shaken not stirred. Drink it down.  This is my comment on their Facebook page . Papi and The Smears are on a mission. " Rock and Roll is dying. We want to give it a PULSE". This Ohio based band create music that combines of indie bliss, straight out of the garage rock and a sprinkling of the blues.  Papi is full on determined to give you a rocking Cleveland centric experience.  The members of the band with the best name out there include Jessica Komyati on lead vocals and guitar, John Jasunas on drums, Devin Ratajczak on bass and harmony vocals. Having three in a band can be a challenge, but these newcomers who have been jamming quietly are poised to make a splash in the pool of  contemporary musi...
