The song "Books" may feel like a simple tune but the lyrics pack a potent message. A group of friends penning tunes that feel like a group hug. Native Ohioans, these Childhood friends and seem like "soul brothers" Taylor(guitar and lead vocals) and Even (banjo) are crafting some laid back tunes that slide into your mind and don't leave easily. A child of the library and a cell phone free society, the song "Books" made me pause.
But we’re just books up on a shelf
Try to understand this if you can
Warm honeyed toned guitar mixed up with soothing strumming of a deftly played banjo. The band Caamp is a welcome sound. I don't always favor the banjo (I think Mumford and Sons may have done a little overkill but that's just me) but on this track the banjo is just another character in the story. A sort of a love story if you might. It is thereby is not overpowering. Taylor's raspy cigarette stained throaty bravado gives this song an a approachable, congenial vibe. I like to call this a "porch song" I can't take credit for that term but it certainly fits this band. a
There is kind and generous feel to this due that has become a solid trio. Caamp is the kind of band I would travel over statelines to go see, pull up a beach chair and share a beer. With their grounded presence and boyish insouciance Caamp plays like a throwback band where the living was easier and all you needed was a banjo, a Gibson and a Fender Precision bass. Lyrics like the following brings it on home.
Say that you’ll call every single day -
place a phone call for you
And I’ll let you listen to my favorite tapes -
play my tapes right through
Say that you love me all the way
These are songs i feel are needed in this edgy time. Laid back but formidable in their message. Mix tapes, pay phones and cars srunning out of gas feels like my 20s :)
I also recommend the song "Vagabond". I will add to this soon.
