"Sometimes you have to get along
I know the truth...... "
Fools Gold epitomizes the elegance of a bongo based, guitar slithered song. John Squire out does himself by wrecking his riffs.. Ian Brown reeks havoc on his bongo. The bewitching lyrics remain buried under the cacophony. Catch a catch phrase like the one above if you can. It is a brilliant song complete with glass breaking notches at the denouement.
Sound designed around the heady prospect that I THINK (my opinion) stems from the disillusionment
with the record music industry. Those heavy bangs on that bongo prove to be perverse and wildly infectious. Yhe track seems vrashly sloppy yet reigned in for production purpose. John mans it up with his bold somewhat ugly sounding guitar noise. This song is noise. But noise with a purpose. A protest. A Lemon song.....
"So the lemon is actually a symbol of protest and defiance, and form a direct link to the song title “Bye Bye Badman”
"Brown claimed that he imagined the words "Choke me, smoke the air, in this citrus-sucking sunshine I don't care" were being sung by a student protester to the face of an armed policeman."
The relevance found in my research caused me pause.

"Anemone" by the BJM came on next. I couldn't have picked a better follow. Thanks You Tube side bar. You know me so well.
"The most significant anemone flower meaning is anticipation. This is because the anemone flowers close up at night and open back up in the morning. Due to its wild nature, the flower specifically symbolizes relaxation and serves as a reminder to enjoy the moment in order to take in opportunities at the right time. According to the Victorian language of flowers, anemone flowers also signify fragility."

I was doing some research for this piece I am doing on the Stone Roses debut album. I feel it still holds up (my opinion. Don't yell at me :) At first, I thought it was about the phases of a love affair that hits it's pinnacle then sputters to a halt. It very well could be. Upon more intense listening, a theme of disillusionment appears to me. Perhaps being hardened and saddened by being part of the music industry in the late 80s, early 90s. I wrote about "Fools Gold" this morning, in light of all the protesting. I learned Lemons are protest symbols. Did you know that? I always loved the cover art for the album. It was done by John Squire, the guitarist. Notice the carefully painted lemons in the Jackson Pollack like painting. Some fruit facts 101 for you.
ReplyDeleteIt's a short read. The song is long. To get even more geeky, the song that showed up in my You Tube sidebar was by Brian Jones Massacre. I hear similarities. I am sure Anton would wear a lemon tshirt. I want to get one. IT's the poet in me that listens hard to the lyric, it's the curious side of me that likes to know random facts, it's the artist in me that is drawn to obscure paintings..
