I am absolutely in love with the band Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Not just because I am crazy cat lady and adore their name but also because the boys are damn good musicians. The five friends hail from Boone, NC. They played together for the past 5 years doing the divey college bar scene where they grabbed a local following. They seemed to have come out of nowhere an now are selling out there shows and playing festivals. There is humility to their work and an honesty I don't always get from emerging artists. Emotive flow and edgy guitar riffs plus jagged bass lines that move the songs along and get caught in your head in a good way not like in Beyonce Put a Ring on It kind of way. I swear I was going to go insane after hearing that song and Katie Perry's Roar back to back while waiting for a slice of pizza.

The boys from Boone have 3 albums under their belt. Their latest "How To: Friend, Love, Freefall" is is a blend of genre bending songs. They worked with Modest Mouse and Frank Ocean so that can tell you a little something about their eccelectism. (Is that a word. It's my new word) I especially liked the video for "Hide" which features four drag queens all in the coming out process. Sam Melo, the heavy bearded lead singer, wasn't sure how it would go over when he came out to his band mates. Their cool cat response "You're a dance major who wears a pea coat, dress shoes, and smokes Djarum Blacks. We know, it’s cool.”
One reason I want to give a shout out to RKS (as they call themselves) is that they worked hard to get where they are at this. Basically catching everybody's eye and ear and just given a whole new bend to some of the the hum drum music that is out there. They did the divey bar scene, the amassed a following, they put in the creative sweat necessary to move forward. I am wishing them a ton of success. I am hoping to catch them live. It feels like it needs to go on my bucket list.
