Artist of the Day - Hello June - written by Christopher Michaels

Playing at Pianos in NYC West Virginia based Hello June’s latest self titled effort is what I would refer to as an ‘imagery album’. It’s the album you put on and are instantly transported to some other place and time. For me, I found myself in a dimly lit roadside bar at 2am. Surrounded by red Formica and sticky black leatherette. My cigarette slowly burns as the smoke gently lifts up into the atmosphere, headed into space. Hello June plays in the background becoming the soundtrack to this otherworldly moment. Romantic imagery aside, what Hello June delivers is a solid, dreamy eight song album. Songs filled with chorus laden guitars weaved together with inventive yet understated drums and vocals rich with meaning and sentiment. The interesting part of the guitar sound is that hidden beneath the shimmer are some over-driven tones that sneak up on you. This works to great effect as Hello June like to make things build. Their first single ‘Mars’ is a great example of this;...

Artist of the Day - Gyasi

The sizzling 6 string playing slithers from one speaker to another on "Wilde Childe". The glassy guitar sounds punched up against the wlld drum beat are so enticing. The sound design slides into a 70s walk through the forest then picks right back up. The unpredictability is  how I came to love all that is Gyasi. He does NOT play it safe. He glams it up in his beautiful way. Yet for someone who is prettier than  your girlfriend, he amps it up wth his stellar guitar playing and ace showmanship.  He to me is the real deal. "See how she changes colors" He hs to be the most colorful performer out there. Unabashed in his lipstick wearing, glam blasting, he brings back the Bowie 70s style. He is checking into the Plant sound zone and doing it up right in these times of safe zones. Maybe don't play this in front of your Mama. NSFW music.   Yea I eat it up. There is so much sexy  drippin from this album.  I...

Morning musings - Big Star

O my soul The ricochet guitar playing moving my feet to dance like an unbridled banshee. The wop pop of the drumming on the skins.  The fuzzing out effect while he slides in "I can't get a license....but he is dying to see you. Hey I always wanted to have tea and biscuits with Alex  Chilton. You know he and I could have one of those cynical chats while I asked him burning questions about his riveting, scuzzed out  guitar playing and yes his relationship with Chris beautiful boy Bell.   Breathe out the wiggle effect.  I came to the Big Star party by way of a married man who wanted to make me his "September Gurl" Yea no! HE asked me if I knew that song. Then he played it. I said are they from London. He snorkeled (like any in genuine one would do) NO Memphis.  I asked him to leave the building but Big Star still holds my hand. The songs deftly crafted by the one and only Alex Chilton and the silent genius, Chris Be...

Album Release - Does It Even Matter - Party Muscles

Allow me to introduce to you to Party Muscles, a 4 piece retro garage rock band hailing from Philadelphia.  Colin Mccarry, Beau Everett Gordon, Tyler Pursel & Joshua Strange. The Capgun may only be for show yet Party Muscles is the real deal. There is a rawness to their delivery coupled with driving guitar riffs, unhinged yet contained. The title appears as a lyric in the unadulterated lyrical smash that is “Secret Language”.   “Watch me as I gasp for air.” He can’t decide if the person can remain a friend. Will it ever be that way again. He goes on to ruminate “Does it even matter?”  Colin is musing  about a desire to move on. But, ever astute, he knows he needs to look back. The feels like a crash course in questioning one’s relationship reality.  The dynamic guitar playing should be noted. Party Muscles is a crashing band. They play hard, quick.  I like they get into their music. It is obvious if you watch the video of “Pocari Sweat”. ...

Artist of the Week - Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia

A n ironic set of results when you Google,Rubber the band.  The useful office staple pops up. This useful educational article appears Rubber: A simple introduction - Explain that Stuff There is also a 2010 movie entitled Rubber. ´ Rubber  is a 2010 English-language French independent, satirical horror film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers.” Apparently it’s based on a true story. Rubber, the band, from Philadelphia consists of Andrew Loper (Singer/Co-Writer) & John Della Franco (Producer/Co-Writer). This amiable duo is quickly gaining steam and streams.  They are playing in several local Philly venues drawing crowds with only 2 secured singles out. They say an EP is coming soon. “Contol” snapped and popped into my finely tuning auditory system. The level of sophisticated twists in this melodious song about contemporary angst is right on point. The aspect of pretending to be in control anchors this sel...

Allow me to Introduce The Inclines

The Inclines hail from Kitchener, Ontario. The dynamic four-piece band release songs that ricochet with emotive prowess. They sing of relationships gone South as well as found love. Their style is a brash mix of alternative self-confessional emo indie rock.  They released a few ripping singles earlier in the Spring.  Here is your introduction to the band. Sam Belanger - Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar Jake Robinson - Bass Guitar/Vocals Brad McNeil - Drums/Vocals Cole Saunders - Lead Guitar What's up with the band name?  – “Our singer came up with it about 3 years ago. It doesn’t have any special meaning we just like how ambiguous it sounds.” Tell me about your start as a band  – “ We’ve been a band since 2016. Our  influences  range across many genres such as punk, and R&B. We write our lyrics as a group. Our songwriting process is very chaotic because we always have many songs on the go.” What is your favorite music to listen to? ...
